Wasn’t one of those Penske Camaros dipped in acid?

It sure was. That blue one with the Sunoco livery.
It’s been said that the sheet metal is so thin that you could make dimples in the metal with your fingers.

The first car for the 67 season was like that. The later cars were not as bad.

Almost every big team regardless of make were acid dipped. If you look at pictures of early season races (especially in 69) a lot of the cars had vinyl tops. That was to hide the warpage on the roofs after dipping. Officials caught on and teams pretty much had to swap tops and leave them bare.
